PostSubject: Turkish Titles and their Pronunciation   Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:39 am

There were many titles of nobility in the Ottoman Empire, but as in many oriental traditions nobility was generally not hereditary as in the west, except for the ruling house, but rather conferred by office, with limited rights for one or more following generations.

Titles in most cases are placed after the given name, ie Hatice Sultan, Hakim Bey. There is one exception for men, where the title Sultan is generally used before the given name.

Here are some common ones:

Padişah pronunciation - the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire

Sultan pronunciation - a title used by male and female royalty; Fatih Sultan Mehmet (male), Hürrem Sultan (female).

Paşa pronunciation - a high rank in the Ottoman political system, typically granted to governors, generals and dignitaries.

Ağa pronunciation - a title for a civil or military office, meaning elder or father.

Efendi pronunciation - equivalent to 'sir', but used also for princes and sons of sultans.

Reis pronunciation (scroll all the way to the bottom for the Turkish) - applied to naval officers, captains and privateers.

Bey pronunciation - meaning 'lord' or 'sir'.

Hanım pronunciation - a respectful honorific appended to women's names.

Hatun - another title for women, usually married.

This is a great and simple guide to Turkish pronunciation:
